WEDNESDAY, JULY 24

Paper Making Workshop #2 SUE GOSIN

Panel discussion -- "Sensing Balance," a panel discussion, Northeast Neighborhood House, Northeast Harbor.
Moderator: Patricia Phillips, writer, author, curator, executive editor of Art Journal, a College Art Association publication.

Panelists: Neuroscientist Dr. Joseph LeDoux, professor at New York University and author of The Emotional Brain and Synaptic Self; Greg Lock, assistant professor of digital media and sculpture at SUNY Purchase whose sculpture combines concrete objects and virtual reality and uses a GPS mapping system; Carl Little, art critic and author of Art of the Maine Islands and Watercolors of John Singer Sargent, director of communications and marketing at the Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth; Nancy Princenthal, art critic, curator, currently on the faculty at Princeton University

Joseph LeDoux will talk about the balance (and imbalance) between
cognitive and emotional systems in the brain. The work is directly
relevant to traumatic memory.

Carl Little will talk about the concept of escape. In a post9/11
period, how do we balance between facing the music and fleeing? Carl will talk about Maine, its landscape tradition, and how it has come to represent a place away from the rest of the world.

Greg Lock's talk will be based on how physicality is perceived in the
real and virtual world. The perception of the "real world" will be
discussed with the aid of images of his sculpture and that of the
"virtual world" will be explored with the aid of virtual sculptures
presented in an interactive 'real-time' virtual environment. The notion of balance will be quite literal via the different sculptures, as well more abstract through his struggle working in such diametric
environments.

Nancy Princenthal will talk about the balance that needs to struck
between artists' prerogatives and the mandate of a community with
respect to public/outdoor art.

THURSDAY, JULY 25

Video Workshop for Adults

The workshop is designed for artists with little prior experience working with video images. The goal is to introduce participants to digital video technology - both shooting and editing - so they can explore it as a creative medium. It will be taught by Mark Lipman, a filmmaker, producer and editor who lives in Boston, Mass. (Click on the link above for more information.)

Young People's Animation

This is a one day workshop in traditional animation as a form of creative expression and experimentation. No previous experience required. Students will take home a flip book. Taught by Nancy Andrews, currently on faculty at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, where she teaches performance art, video making and film history. (Click on the link above for more information.)

The Reach of an Arm, Nancy Andrews

The Reach of an Arm (2002) 16mm film (B&W, optical sound, 30 minutes) puppet animation and live action. Peculiarity and Frank Goodin, portrayed by puppets, seek their fortune as many did during the westward movement of the 1800's. Peculiarity has seen the promise of a better life, "The trouble with you, Frank, is that you shot half your brain off. This is your chance to get rich." And, so they set out in their homemade wagon. This film's soundtrack of music, song and sound effects, was recorded live, referencing sound of the "silent" film era.
