Mount Desert Symposium in the Arts, LandEscapes is a yearly, nonprofit, multidiscipline organization that takes place for one week in the summer on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Our mission is to invite artists and other professionals to participate with the various communities on the island, which include a diverse summer, year-round and visiting residents. The island also has two renowned scientific laboratories, music and educational institutions, which are very active especially during the summer. LandEscapes presents the participants to the island in the form of art installations, lectures, panels, films and workshops, which are generally free and open to the public. Acadia National Park is also on the island, and offers a rare opportunity to experience such a beautiful place on the coast of Maine.
This year we are presenting a symposium around the theme of Food. We are inviting curators from Maine down to New York City to invite an artist to participate in an installation project at Beech Hill Farm, a 75 acre organic farm which is owned and operated by the College of the Atlantic. We will be hosting an opening at the farm on July 23, which will also include other related activities, including a cakewalk, which will hopefully generate a large audience as well as extensive press coverage.
The installation created by an artist should be based on some aspect of food, although this can be approached from almost any direction. The symposium is only one week long, but we ask that these installations remain on the site for 2 more weeks. The installation projects will be up for viewing for a total of three weeks. We have on board already curators from New York as well as several curators from the Maine area including Universities, galleries and art centers.
In addition, there will be workshops including a pinhole photography class taught by Jessica Ferguson from Boston, a painted plate workshop taught by sculptor Nancy Bowen from New York, a writers workshop taught by novelist Christina Baker Kline and a poetry workshop by Mount Desert Island Candace Stover. There will also be a panel which will include James Beard-award-winning cookbook author Laura Schenone, James Beard award winning cookbook writer, who will also be giving a cooking demonstration at a private residence on the Island. Tickets for purchase will be required for the cooking demonstration for this event.
